Common Composting Toilet FAQs

  • A composting toilet works by using aerobic decomposition to transform human waste into a humus-like material suitable for use as fertilizer.

Unlike a traditional toilet which flushes waste away into a septic tank or sewage system, composting toilets treat waste locally to produce a solid substance similar to humus while liquids are separated to ensure an aerobic environment for the microbial activity.

This process of composting, in which waste is converted into a nutrient-rich soil amendment, makes composting toilets a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional sanitation.

  • No, composting toilets do not smell when used properly.

They will not stink out your van, boat, tiny home, camper, or cabin.

  • It’s easier than you might think. For solids, most people bag them and toss them out with their household waste - kind of like dealing with a used diaper. Quick, clean, and low effort. If you’re set up for it, you can compost the solids, but be sure to follow your local guidelines and only use certified compostable bags.

Urine’s even simpler. Just pour it into a regular toilet down a drain or by a mature tree. You can also dilute it (usually 1:10) and give your ornamental plants a natural nutrient boost.

Some of our Compo Crew even divert it straight into a greywater system with our Drain Away Kit

  • Depending on size and style of composting toilet the time between emptying varies.

For Cuddy Composting Toilet you will empty the solids bin every 2-4 weeks depending on use or around 25-30 #2s.

For Cuddy Lite you will empty the solids bin after 5-10 #2s.

Cuddy and Cuddy Lite have a 1.7 Gallon urine bottle. It will last 2 people full time 1-2 days.
