Cuddy9 questions
How big is Cuddy?

D 17″ × W 15.2″ × H 16.5″ — about the same as a standard portable chemical toilet, so you can swap one out directly. Most toilets at home are 15–17″ tall.

Do I need to vent Cuddy outside?

Not always. It depends whether you are full-time and where you live. For full-time use we do recommend it, and it is easy to do. You can vent outside or use the Venting Carbon Filter if you would rather not drill holes in your rig. Venting a Cuddy Lite is unnecessary.

What size are the urine bottle and solids bin?

The urine bottle is 1.7 gallons / 6.5 liters. The removable solids bin is 3.9 gallons / 14.7 liters.

How often do I empty my Cuddy?

When either bin is full. For two people that is usually 2–3 days for liquids and 2–3 weeks for solids.

Why does Cuddy have an agitator?

Turning the agitator mixes your #2 into the coir and lets air in. That dries it out, keeps smells down and shrinks it, so you empty less often.

What are the power requirements?

A 9V battery (not included) for the urine indicator light, and 12V hard-wired for the internal fan. The fan connector is a standard 5.5 × 2.1mm male DC power cord on a 4ft cable, wired in with a 1A fuse. Cuddy pulls only 0.1 amps at 12 volts.

What is Cuddy made of?

ABS plastic, stainless steel and anodized aluminum. The agitator is anodized aluminum; its handle is marine-grade stainless steel and anodized aluminum.

Can I put Cuddy in a wetbath?

Yes. Cuddy is water resistant, but keep it out of the direct line of spray and cover it while you shower. Seal any screw or rivet holes with silicone or vulkem caulking when you install it.

Where is Cuddy made?

Cuddy is assembled in the USA using both U.S. and imported parts.

Cuddy Lite5 questions
Why would I want a Cuddy Lite rather than a Cuddy?

Most people who asked for an agitator-less version wanted to line the bin with a bag for easier cleaning, and some prefer the lower price. Here’s how it works: line the solids bin with a bag and add about an inch of coco coir. After each #2, cover it with roughly a cup of coir. After 8–12 uses, tie off the bag and bin it where local rules allow.

Can I line the Cuddy Lite solids bin with a bag?

Yes — 8–9 US gallon bags fit. We recommend a compostable bag.

What is the difference between the Cuddy and the Cuddy Lite?

Cuddy Lite has the same seat, lid, covering plates, urine bottle, urine indicator light and footprint as Cuddy. It doesn’t have the agitator, fan or carbon filter, so the only power it needs is a 9V battery for the indicator light. Instead, you use the layering method: a bag in the solids bin and a scoop of coco coir after each #2.

What size are Cuddy Lite’s containers?

The same as the Cuddy: 1.7 gallons of liquid, 3.9 gallons of solids.

Is Cuddy Lite easy to move?

Yes. The integrated handles let you grab and move it without pinching fingers or losing grip.

S1 Dry Flush7 questions
Is there an S1 without a battery?

Yes. The S1 Dry Flush Sealing Toilet – 12V (No Battery) is the same S1 inside, without the internal battery. Wire it into your house (leisure) battery with a 10A fuse and it runs straight off your rig’s 12V system, so there’s nothing to charge. It runs on 12V only: it isn’t compatible with 24V systems and can’t be plugged into a household socket.

Can the S1 be stored in a shower or wet room?

The S1 has waterproof connectors but the unit is water resistant, not waterproof. Keep it out of the direct line of water, remove it while the shower is running, or cover it.

Is there a backup if the sealing mechanism breaks or I run out of bags?

Yes. The sealing mechanism can be removed and the solids bin lined with a regular bag — it then works exactly like a Cuddy Lite.

What bag liners are available for the S1?

Two types: compostable and high-barrier. Each S1 and Adapter Kit ships with one roll of each so you can try both before ordering refills.

Can I leave the S1 plugged in all the time?

Don’t connect the S1 to power below 0 °C (32 °F). In cold weather, unplug it at the DC connector or the wall.

How many flushes do I get per refill?

Approximately 25 uses per roll.

Why does the S1 have an app?

Bluetooth lets you tell the S1 which bag material you are using and apply mandatory software updates. If you would rather not have Bluetooth, this is not the product for you.

Composting toilets8 questions
Do composting toilets smell?

No, not when used properly. They will not stink out your van, RV, boat, tiny home or cabin. The composted material looks and smells earthy, like a forest floor.

Can you urinate in a composting toilet?

Yes. Ours are designed to separate urine from solids, which is exactly what eliminates the odor.

Where do I empty my composting toilet?

Always check local rules. Usually solids can go in a biodegradable bag into a regular trash can, the same way diapers and pet waste are handled. Liquids can be poured down a regular toilet or onto the nearest thirsty looking mature tree.

Can I put the compost in my garden?

Not until it has fully finished composting, which takes several months — usually 6–12, depending on temperature. It is safe to add the contents to a compost pile to carry on breaking down.

Can I use a composting toilet if I have my period?

Yes. Blood and tissue are fine in either bin. We do not recommend putting pads or tampons in — they will not break down, they fill the bin faster and they make the agitator harder to turn.

Is it OK to go if I have diarrhea?

Yes. When the solids bin is too moist, add more coco coir to bring the moisture level back. You may need to empty a little sooner than usual.

Can I put food scraps in my composting toilet?

We do not recommend it — food scraps attract flies and other insects.

Can I use bleach to sanitize it?

No. Bleach kills the bacteria the solids need to compost. For a deep clean use a 5:1 solution of water to vinegar, and clean the rest with a soft cloth and soapy water.

Troubleshooting7 questions
Something is wrong with my Cuddy. What do I do?

Email info@compocloset.com with photos or a video of the issue so we can see what is going on. It is our goal to solve every issue.

I keep getting urine in my solids bin. How do I fix it?

Close the covering plates before a #1. They keep urine out of the solids bin, and any drips on the plates run down a small chute into the urine bottle. Open them again for a #2. Sitting down rather than standing, and scooting forward on the seat, helps with aim.

How do I remove scale buildup in the urine bottle?

White vinegar at roughly 5:1 water to vinegar. Pour some in after emptying, swirl and tip it out. Enzymatic anti-scaling products work too. Emptying and rinsing regularly keeps scale down.

There are bugs in my toilet. What do I do?

They are most likely fruit flies. Sprinkle half a cup of diatomaceous earth over your coco coir, leave it a while, then agitate to kill eggs and larvae. Coco coir attracts fewer bugs than peat moss.

Why does my Cuddy stink when it is not supposed to?

Usually it’s one of two things: the urine bottle sat full for a while, or some urine got into the solids bin. Empty the urine bottle, and add a splash of vinegar every other time you empty it. If the solids bin looks damp, add more coco coir. Check the one-way valve in the urine bottle too: it’s silicone and needs replacing every 6–12 months.

There is condensation inside my toilet. Why?

A little condensation is normal. Composting gives off warmth, and the moisture settles on the cooler lid and walls. Wipe it away, add more coco coir and turn the agitator regularly. Using Cuddy full time or somewhere humid? Vent it outside or add the Venting Carbon Filter.

There is mold in my solids bin. What do I do?

No need to worry — mold is part of the natural composting process. Turn the agitator regularly to mix it back through the bin.
