What Is a Dry Flush Toilet?

A dry flush toilet is a type of portable toilet that operates without water, chemicals, or composting.

Instead of using water to flush and move contents to a holding tank, it uses a dry system like a bagging or sealing mechanism, sometimes powered by a compressed air system, to encapsulate and isolate waste immediately after use.

Key Characteristics of Dry Flush Toilets:

  • No water or plumbing required
  • No composting process
  • No chemicals or blue goo
  • Odorless sealing system
  • Low maintenance

Our S1 Dry Flush Sealing Toilet is a perfect example of a true dry flush toilet. It’s portable, eco-friendly, and ideal for off-grid living.

The Two Types of Dry Flush Toilets

Not all dry flush toilets work the same way. Broadly, there are two main types:

Twist Style Dry Flush Toilets

Twisting-style dry flush toilets use a continuous liner inside a cartridge. Each time you flush, the liner twists and wraps the waste to contain odors.

It’s a simple and effective system, but because the liner is one continuous piece, you can’t empty it mid-use. Even if you’ve only gone a few times, you’ll need to remove the entire cartridge when it’s time to empty—making it less flexible and more wasteful than other systems.

These toilets also require a pee powder or coagulant to gel liquids, since they don’t separate urine from solids.

Sealing Dry Flush Toilets

Heat-sealing systems use a battery-powered mechanism to seal each use into an individual hygienic package. Each flush creates a separate, odor-free pouch that can be removed independently - so you can empty it at any time without wasting unused liner material.

Like twisting dry flush toilets, most heat-sealing designs are intended for both liquids and solids together, meaning they also require a pee powder to solidify urine before sealing.

What Makes the S1 Dry Flush Toilet Stand Out

The S1 isn’t just another dry flush toilet. It’s the first to combine push-button sealing with urine diversion, keeping things cleaner, drier, and smell-free.

Unlike other systems that rely on harsh chemical powders to mask moisture and odor, the S1 needs none of it. No powders, no chemicals, no guesswork. Our built-in separation and sealing system locks solids in an odor-proof liner. No mixing, no mess, and nothing extra to pack.

Cleaner. Simpler. Smarter.

Dry Flush FAQs

  • Not if they’re well designed—like the S1. Sealing or separating mechanisms prevent odors from escaping.

  • Absolutely! The S1 was practically made for it. It’s compact, portable, and doesn’t need hookups.

  • No. Dry flush = sealing toilet that seals waste for disposal. Composting = begins breakdown but needs time to become compost.

  • Yes, but always check local disposal rules, especially for bagged matter.
