What Is a Dry Flush Toilet?

A dry flush toilet is a type of portable toilet that operates without water, chemicals, or composting.

Instead of using water to flush and move contents to a holding tank, it uses a dry system like a bagging or sealing mechanism, sometimes powered by a compressed air system, to encapsulate and isolate waste immediately after use.

Key Characteristics of Dry Flush Toilets:

  • No water or plumbing required
  • No composting process
  • No chemicals or blue goo
  • Odorless sealing system
  • Low maintenance

Our S1 Dry Flush Sealing Toilet is a perfect example of a true dry flush toilet. It’s portable, eco-friendly, and ideal for off-grid living.

The Two Types of Dry Flush Toilets

Not all dry flush toilets work the same way. Broadly, there are two main types:

Bagging and Sealing Toilets

These use a clever mechanical or air-powered system to wrap, seal, or compress each “flush” into a tough liner or bag. Each use is individually sealed off, keeping odors locked away and making disposal a breeze.

The S1 Dry Flush Sealing Toilet even separates liquids from solids before sealing, reducing bag use, smell and mess.

Cartridge-Based Toilets

Some dry flush designs use preloaded cartridges with multiple sealed liners or pouches. Each time you “flush,” a new section of liner is advanced and sealed. When the cartridge is full, you simply remove and replace it.

While convenient, these systems create more plastic waste since you have to “flush” with every use, even for #1’s.

Both types are waterless, chemical-free (if you want them to be), and some models are portable.

What Makes the S1 Dry Flush Toilet Stand Out

The S1 isn’t just another dry flush toilet. It’s the first to combine push-button sealing with urine diversion, keeping things cleaner, drier, and smell-free.

Unlike other systems that rely on harsh chemical powders to mask moisture and odor, the S1 needs none of it. No powders, no chemicals, no guesswork. Our built-in separation and sealing system locks solids in an odor-proof liner. No mixing, no mess, and nothing extra to pack.

Cleaner. Simpler. Smarter.

Dry Flush FAQs

  • Not if they’re well designed—like the S1. Sealing or separating mechanisms prevent odors from escaping.

  • Absolutely! The S1 was practically made for it. It’s compact, portable, and doesn’t need hookups.

  • No. Dry flush = sealing toilet that seals waste for disposal. Composting = begins breakdown but needs time to become compost.

  • Yes, but always check local disposal rules, especially for bagged matter.
