The science, simply explained

How it
actually works

Urine diverted automatically
01

Urine diverted automatically

The built-in diverter sends liquid to a dedicated 1.7-gallon bottle. Liquid and solid never mix.

Coco coir accelerates breakdown

Coco coir accelerates breakdown

A layer of coco coir in the solids bin kickstarts natural composting and controls moisture.

After looking at reviews of many kinds of toilets for out camper build we decided the Cuddy looks like the best one for us, so we bought one.

Last night I wanted to show our Cuddy Compo toilet to someone. As I was carrying it to the kitchen I stubbed my toe, lost my balance, and went flying. I dropped the Cuddy and it sounded like it fell apart! I fell on it, cut my eyebrow and loosened a tooth.

When I checked the Cuddy only the lid was off. It was tight to get back on but it’s as good as new. You can’t tell it had a big adventure. I think that’s a good testament to high quality

Here at Beloved Cabin Homestead & Stay we have some of the more popular and recognized toilets made by six different composting toilet manufacturers.

After organizing 32 tiny houses festivals since March 2016, and hosting 1000’s of guests from around the world here on our homestead with our 11 unique getaways of tiny houses on wheels, yurts, geodesic domes and a bus conversion… we can say with honesty and much experience the CompoCloset is our most favorite portable composting toilet.

The CompoCloset combines all the best qualities of the 12 composting toilets we have here on our 16-acre homestead, while at the same time not including any of what we dislike about all the other composting toilets we own.

By far, the CompostClost is the most high-quality, convenient, reliable and portable composting toilet we have ever used over the past 15 years.

8 years into full-timing in a tiny trailer without a bathroom, Covid convinced me that we really should have our own private loo. We upsized to a 16'9" trailer with a toilet and shower, and replaced the flush toilet with a composting version before ever using it (black tank, ew). That was just over 2 years ago and we're so happy with Cuddy!

-It doesn't need to be vented (expect condensation, it's okay!). I don't love the idea of drilling more holes in my house. You can if you want to, but I didn't.

-It takes up less space than the flush toilet it replaced. My husband can sit without his knees hitting the door in our corner bathroom. Not having an awkward space to clean behind the toilet is a bonus. It's Velcro'd in place so I can remove it when I'm in deep cleaning mode.

-We're in the desert about 80% of the time. Water is scarce and expensive. Composting is a no-brainer.

-It really doesn't smell. As I don't trust myself not to get used to anything, every once in a while I have a friend- a real, brutally honest friend, the kind who'll tell me when I have spinach stuck in my teeth- do a smell check. Cuddy passes. One of those friends now has one in her van.

-Cleaning isn't a big deal. I'm not saying it's not a task, but it's not as gross as some might think, and having a water-free waste system is worth it to me. The body of the toilet itself is easy to keep clean on a daily basis, as it's mostly smooth surfaces without a ton of nooks and crannies. I empty the pee bottle as part of my morning routine, but it's usually less than half full at that point. After emptying, I pour in a small amount of white vinegar and swish it around. About once a week I do a more major vinegar and water rinse (water is precious). To empty the bucket, I put a composting trash bag over the whole thing, then turn it over to dump. In circumstances where we don't have access to trash services, I use the kitty litter scooping method and bury the waste. Every once in a while, I do the whole deep clean the bucket thing, which consists of spraying cleaner, letting it sit, using a stick to scrape what needs to be scraped, spraying cleaner again, then wiping it out. I don't actually think this is necessary, but I'm a bit of a clean freak. Of course I wear gloves while doing any of this.

-From a resale standpoint, nothing about the trailer had to be compromised. I capped off the water supply, put a plug in the toilet flange, and built a low plinth to set the toilet because the flange isn't flush with the floor. Any future owner can easily reinstall a flush toilet if that's what they want (and we can transfer Cuddy to our next home).

Long story short, we love Cuddy and will purchase another if we ever move into another camper and our current one goes with it!

I’m an Off-Grid Upfitter, we travel in a 30’ Class A motorhome and our first upgrade was swapping out the OEM RV toilet for the Cuddy Composting Toilet. We've used composting toilets for over 6 years and were happy with our previous one however we are always looking to see what's out there and the Cuddy caught our attention due to some really outstanding features:
- Compact without feeling like a bucket: RV bathrooms are tiny, even in larger RVs but at 15" x 17" it doesn't take up much floor space.
- Wall-Hugging: The Cuddy’s got a clever hinge design so you can place it right up against the wall. No wasted space, no awkward angles.
- Pee Tank Light: Ever overflowed a pee tank in the dead of night? We have! The warning light shines bright before it overflows and has already saved us!
- To Vent or Not to Vent? We've tried both with no smell either way. We did eventually vent for more winter moisture control though.
- Opaque Urine Tank: It’s black and does not show off the urine colored content when you adventure out to dump it. Everyone loves a little mystery.
- Interior Solids Bin: Removing an interior solids bin rather than disassembling the toilet and taking out the base to empty was something we did not consider a big deal in our research but in real world use it made life a lot easier and saved time. A definite plus!

These toilets are great for smaller RVs like vans and truck campers we don't feel we had to make any compromises using the Cuddy instead of any other composting toilets

For anyone reading this that travels in a larger RV and your wondering why you would want to go this direction:
It frees your black tank making room for more grey water storage and we all know how fast the grey tank fills up!
No flushing required so your fresh water lasts longer.
These things are sturdy and well designed; We put it through the wringer, and it is holding up without any issues.
We love our toilet and feel confident recommending them to our upfitting clients.

Just what we needed; easy to use, NO SMELLS

This is the second Cuddy I’ve purchased. I installed the first in our garden office and loved it so much I decided to get one when we got our new RV! We found the Cuddy from the vanlife movement. It is only 24 lbs so easy for me to move, but that's not really necessary. It is small, but big enough to be comfortable.Unlike other composting toilets with agitators, Cuddy is easy to maintain. No picking it up to empty, no costly cassett. NO SMELLS! Cuddy has a sealed liquid container that is easy to lift in and out of the Cuddy. Just lift it out, then empty it in a regular toilet, or pour in an isolated area (which will kill weeds and deter unwanted animals.) I also like the addition of the LED for the pee bottle - no guessing when a scummy bottle is full and getting it wrong! The solids container is also super easy. We use sawdust, but others use coco coir, or bedding pellets. The agitator makes it really easy to mix without making a mess, and there's really no smell! We put the toilet paper into a seperate sealed container lined with a plastic veggiebag from the grocery store, and then into the garbage or compost pile.  Separating toilet paper is common in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Caribbean islands we have visited, so it's not a big deal. We dispose the solids right into the regular garbage. The bin is easy to lift out, dispose into a garbage bag, then right into the garbage. It can also be recycled in a long-term composter.Everything is really well thought out - the size, the seat, access hinges, Carbon Filter, urine diverter. And, their customer service is great. I had questions about the solids materials and they got back to me right away. They also have cute YouTube videos showing the Cuddy out in the wild.  Cuddy is just the best and I can't recommend it enough!

Toilet came to us in perfect condition, assembly was very straight forward and all components worked well, except the toilet lid will not stay on hinges. It would fall off when raised from the right side. Easy to reattach but annoying in the middle of the night when using. Not real sure what the fix would be, but with the ease of use, that is just a small inconvenience. We will purchase another one in the future. Thank you for your product, it has made that part of camping less stressful.

Thanks Randy! I'm sorry to hear the lid isn't staying on your Cuddy's hinges. Can you please email us so we can take a look?

Perfect toilet for travel purposes. We use this toilet in our SUV and it works great. It doesn’t smell at all. You can tell there’s a lot of thought put into the design. It’s very well-made. We researched the lot for the perfect toilet for our scenario. This is not the largest capacity toilet by any means. But it works perfect for travel.

Thanks Akseli!

Although we have not yet experienced the process of emptying our Cuddy, we have had a fine time filling it. It’s compact design fit exactly where we needed it and its simple aesthetic means we don’t feel the need to hide it or disguise it in any way.

So far, 10/10

Great experience. Extraordinary customer service.
Being new to any kind of off-grid lifestyle I was happy to come across quite a few social media platforms that had high praise for this product. I had emailed the company to confirm I had everything I needed. Emily exceeded my expectations (which I have high standards being in the industry for 20 years) by not only responding to my request, but responded in a uncannily quick manner. Not to mention she walked me through the entire process, and informed me a product that was out stock was available and switched out on my order for me. She was extremely personable and felt like I was just chatting with a friend. I look forward to using my unit in my new mountain cabin.

Thanks Gina! We can't wait to see your Cuddy in your cabin! :D

John digs road trips.

My wife and I tried it out for the first time on a two week road/ski trip to Colorado. We were also trying out our new homemade little travel trailer lol. I was a little nervous about composting toilets but the Cuddy worked great! The quality is good and it's easy to live with, empty, clean and all the things I was worried about. Looking forward to the next trip!

Thanks John! Happy Adventures!

It’s good and it does the job. It’s cheap plastic and overpriced. The marketing is nightmare, I think I’ve already unsubscribed. It’s just toilet, I’m not on the compocrew and I don’t want to join a club revolving around my toilet. !

I have installed Cuddy, w/ fan & light etc. We have not used it yet and will not until spring. So far I like the design of the two removable tanks. The solids tank is a little hard to remove, and the handle has to be folded into the forward position, otherwise it conflicts with the filter. I find the seat a bit uncomfortable. Coming from an Airhead previously, which had a more comfortable seat for the tush. Will report further once we have used the Cuddy for awhile.

Awesome! Zero smell!!!

I was skeptical that any composting toliet wouldn’t smell. But, wow! The Cuddy has NO ODOR at all. The Cuddy is so easy to use and to empty, far easier than our former cassette toliet, which smelled like a sewer ever since formaldehyde, as a component of toliet chemicals, was outlawed. Since we go to very hot places we decided to routinely add 4 Polident denture cleaning tablets to the urine bottle after each time we empty it. Doing so eliminates any slight odors. And, the tablets are cheap, $6.00 for 120 tablets. We also decided to buy another urine tank to extend the time in between urine dumps, in case we weren’t somewhere we wanted to dump the urine. Not a big investment but offers more peace of mind. The Cuddy is very solidly built. Its functional simplicity demonstrates a design which is clearly very well thought out.The customer support is amazing, calming my pre purchase anxiety by answering lots of questions about whether or not this toliet was too good to be true. The price is more than fair, especially when considering the other non bucket sophisticated toilet alternatives. Plus it has the smallest foot print of the composting toilets, a key need in our Sprinter van. Yet it doesn’t feel small when using it.We put it in a sliding drawer that fits underneath our bed. Cuddy’s coiled power cord makes it easy to use with our sliding drawer. This is one example of the thought put into the toliet’s design. The toliet hole through which one poops is huge, no chance for messy accidents. The gently tilted tray area that channels urine into its bottle is also large, both great functional design features. The fan uses extremely little power and is almost silent. We don’t see the need to vent it externally, since it doesn’t smell without doing so.The carbon filter is easily replenished, something that is needed very infrequently. The agitator is super easy to use and its placement in the front of the toliet is ideal for use in our sliding drawer. The toliet lid is designed in such a way as it could open flat to a wall behind the toilet, another key space saver.Getting out the urine canister couldn’t be easier. Emptying it is as simple as opening up the lid, pulling out the urine container and unscrewing a small lid. The poop container also just lifts out from the open lid, so much easier than other toilets. It’s a great toliet and a great company. I’d definitely buy it again.

We are absolutely in love with our Cuddy! So easy to empty the #1 tank and #2 bucket. Zero smell. We read other reviews and it’s 100% true. Actually less smell in changing the #2 bucket’s bag than changing the kitchen garbage bag! What an amazing unit. No more campground portapotties for us!!! And it’s a short learning curve to use it…sit forward for #1’s and farther back for #2’s. Thank you…our Cuddy has been a camping game changer!!

Common questions

We’ve heard it all

Does it smell?

No. Composted material looks and smells earthy, like a forest floor. Urine and solids are separated so no sewage smell is ever created.

Do I need to drill holes in my van?

No. Cuddy works without venting, thanks to its built-in fan and carbon filter. If you use it full time, we recommend venting it outside, or adding the Venting Carbon Filter if you’d rather not drill.

What goes in the solids bin?

A small amount of coconut coir or wood shavings to start the composting process. No chemicals, no special products.

What is the difference between Cuddy and Cuddy Lite?

Cuddy has an agitator and composting system, better for full-time and extended use. Cuddy Lite uses bags instead, with no agitator — simpler and great for part-time use.
